The Story of How This Company Came to Be

One Sunday morning while showering, I decided I no longer wanted to attend the church we have been going to for years. I felt out of place and unwanted. I explained to my wife that I would not be going to that church anymore. She was adamant she was not quitting. I tried to explain that I was not feeling like we belonged there; I just didn’t feel welcome. She finished dressing and said, “I am going.” “Go ahead, I am not,” was my answer. I heard her say “That is between you and God.” “Well, I am not going there,” was my retort. Then I heard, “Yes you will go and start a discipleship class.” I said “You can’t tell me what to do, I am not going.” I heard “Yes you will go and start a discipleship class.” I then said “Are you deaf or something, I am not going.” The Voice got silent for a moment, so I pushed the shower door open. I could not see anyone in the room and said, “Where are you? I am not going.” Then, realizing my wife wasn’t there, I said, “Who is this?” The voice said, “You know who this is.” I then became terrified and started crying and fell to the shower floor. I realized I was in the presence of the Holy Spirit and could not stop crying. I finally found words and said, “Lord, you got the wrong person. I am not a teacher; I do not know what to say or do.” The voice said, “I will guide you.” I again cried out, “Lord you have the wrong guy.” There was silence for a minute or two. I realized I needed to talk to someone who could explain to me what just happened and what I should do. I was afraid and shocked and excited all at the same time. I jumped into my clothes, barely drying off and ran to my truck to get to the church. I met my good friend at the door. I was so excited he could hardly make any sense of what I was saying had happened. I took a breath and explained what happened and asked “What should I do? I need help to do this; I am not qualified to teach Discipleship.” He said “Well you’d better get started, there is a lot of work needed.” I asked “Will you help me?” “Sure,” he answered. We stayed after the service to discuss a plan and strategy. We planned to start the group one week from Monday. I talked to the Pastor and he was excited as well. My friend and I started calling people to come to the class. We had no real commitments but several maybes. I searched the buildings for books we could use. None were found, so the only way was to have a planning session and I would order books for next Monday. I got there on Monday evening and there were many people there waiting to get in. I opened the door and let them into our classroom. I found my friend and thanked him for inviting so many people. His answer was “I did not invite them, I don’t know any of them.” So I asked one woman “Who invited you?” and she said “I heard you were starting a discipleship class.” “Yes, but who invited you?” Her reply was “I said I heard.” She explained she worked in women’s prison ministry and knew we would need help. My answer was “Wow!” As each person stood to say why they were there I ask who invited them. They all answered, “We heard you needed help.” We asked them to gather in small groups as per what their skills were. At the end of the class I thanked them for their willingness to further God’s will. We prayed and they left. My friend and l were so excited I couldn’t wait to tell our pastor all about it. I met with the pastor on Friday and told him all the good news, but he did not seem to be excited and I left wondering why he wasn’t excited like we were. Shortly after that, he asked me to put the class on hold for a couple weeks with no explanation. The following Sunday the pastor announced he would be leaving in two weeks. I was beside myself and unsure of what to do. We met Monday night and I explained that the pastor asked if we could put it off for a couple weeks as he wanted to lead the class. As I talked everyone began to get their things together and when I finished, they all got up to leave. I asked what was going on and they replied that they have seen this before and did not want any part of it. Things got heated at the church and everyone was upset. I announced once more that I was starting a class for men who wanted to learn how to be disciples and mentor others. The class was on Wednesday night and after a couple of weeks I found myself by myself. I said to myself “I told you Lord, I don’t know what to do.” I stopped going on Wednesday night and felt alone again. We were assigned an interim pastor for a year and a half and another for about 2 years. One of those pastors was a great guy who mentored me and took me to the wood shed over quitting both groups. I started reading the Bible every morning and loved it immensely. Words and sentences would jump off the page at me and I began writing them down. Soon I began looking for words than presented questions that needed an answer. That’s when the Lord revealed to me to put them on T-shirts so people could ask “What does that mean?” I finally got what it all meant. If the T-shirt you are wearing asks a scriptural question and someone asks you “What does that mean?” and you respond with a Biblical answer, that can be the beginning of a conversation about the gospel and you have just taken an important step to become a disciple for Christ. That breaks the fear of starting a conversation and then you begin to mentor them; that makes you a disciple. The key is that each T-shirt references a specific Bible scripture to help you develop friendship and love. That, Jesus says is the second greatest commandment of all. “Love your neighbor as yourself.” Mark 12:30-32. The First and Greatest commandment is “You shall Love thy Lord your God with all your heart and your soul, and with all your mind, and with all your strength.” He was beaten and scourged and led off to be nailed to a cross, to die to seal his love for us! While hanging on the cross, He asked His Father, to “Forgive them for they know not what they do”. He then said “It is finished” and He died. That is not the end. That is the beginning of our story to help others to see the light at the end of the tunnel of life. To live a life of peace and tranquility and have a life that never ends. That is his promise of salvation to us. May the Lord be with you and keep you free of fear and evil and bless you with Wisdom and Peace until He takes us Home. Your Brother and servant in Christ R.
